The Undeniable Importance of Certifications in HIT (and How to Get Them)

That’s great, but are they certified?  If I had a dollar for every time a recruiter asked me this question about a potential candidate, I’d be . . . well I wouldn’t be here telling you about it, most likely (think raft with a drink holder kind of situation).   It’s no secret than an Epic certification, for instance, is the current “golden ticket” when it comes to EMR implementation consultant job security – have you seen the hundreds of blog comments to Shirley Corsey’s popular column from aspiring Epic-certified professionals who are trying to follow in Shirley’s footsteps?

But Epic certified professionals are only one piece of the Healthcare IT workforce – there are many alternative approaches to becoming a competitive, contributing, sought-after candidate with a long and lucrative career in HIT. A quick look at the current opportunities on Healthcare IT Central (HITC) shows a wide variety of additional roles with required or preferred certifications that are a bit less elusive to earn and every bit as desirable.  In fact, we’ve recently added a “Certifications” section to the HITC Candidate profiles, to make it easier for recruiters to spot certified applicants.  Here’s a look at the certifications options we’ve included, based on what recruiters tell us they’re looking for (if we missed one, please let me know):
