Healthcare IT: Creative Writers Needed!

When you think of the amazing career possibilities before you within the world of Health IT, you may think of revamping a hospital’s filing system to meet new digital requirements or developing a platform through which a local doctor can host online forums once a month with medical questions from the community.  Those jobs are undoubtedly important, and will be in demand in the months and years ahead.  But, what if your strength lies in creative writing?  Is there is a role for you in this growing industry?  The answer is an absolute yes!

Many of you may be familiar with the article that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention posted on its website last year offering its visitors advice on how to prepare for a zombie attack.  Now, the government agency is back with a wedding day survival guide, using the reasoning that weddings can be quite stressful and therefore cause some strain on your health.

Now, the point of these articles is not that the CDC is truly concerned that millions of us are going to perish at the hands of zombies or that the wrong topper on your cake is going to lead to a life-threatening heart attack.  The goal, instead, is to get people talking and checking out some other information on the website.  The zombie article crashed the CDC’s servers when first published.  The wedding piece is already responsible for more than a thousand hits.  This unique and fun approach is working to engage the public.

Do you have strong writing skills that could be used to draw an audience to the website of a doctor’s office or an employer who is trying to encourage better health practices among her employees?  If so, you should not discount the role that you can play in health IT.  Brainstorm for a bit and I imagine you’ll come up with something great!

  • Dear Joe,

I read your post with great interest and would like to pursue Health Care creative writing opportunities. My degree is in Journalism which I parlayed into a writing, editing, and book doctoring business. This led me to Instructional and Multimedia Design which morphed to the Health Care Electronic Medical Records industry. For the past 10 years I worked as an Instructional Designer (both instructor-led and distance web learning), as an EHR/EMR Help Desk specialist, Activation floor support and command center consultant, and Training Manager.

Currently, I am working on re-establishing my writing business and finishing a children’s novel while working diligently to become an excellent poet.

I would very much like to have the opportunity to work with you, especially since I know the Health Care industry well. Should you want to see my resumes, please contact me at: elizabetmarshall@gmail.com.

Hope you are having a lovely Thanksgiving weekend.

    Sincerely,
    Elizabeth

  • Hi Elizabeth – My post was intended to suggest that people with great backgrounds like yours have the potential to really exercise those writing skills by blogging (or other writing) for their current organizations or maybe a local hospital or organizations like HIMSS or ACHE. Lots of organizations need talented writers to keep putting great content out! It just takes a few calls or e-mails to find a good fit. Good luck to you! Joe
